rules, Definitions, & details

Definitions

A. LEGO: The name LEGO® is used to identify the building system style for the contest. LEGO® is a trademark of the LEGO® Group of companies which does not sponsor, authorize, or endorse this contest. Other brands of building bricks may be used--see ELIGIBILITIES for list of eligible brick styles.

B. CREATION:  A created entry comprising LEGO® or similar bricks--see ELIGIBILITIES for list of eligible brick styles.

         The Three Types of Creations:

         (1) Set Built: A Creation commercially produced by the LEGO® company or similar companies which include instructions. A Creation is also considered Set Built if it is created from downloadable instructions from the Internet. These sets may be entered into the Display Only category [See (3) Display Only definition below] for personal pride.

Not eligible for Contest prizes. Will receive participation prize.

         (2) Original Built: A Creation which is not based on a kit or Internet instructions. The full spirit of an Original Built is that it is a Creation of the mind of the Contestant. An Original Built Creation CAN BE a variation of a Set Built Creation, but variations will lose points in the Originality and Creativity categories in proportion to how much of the set they retain. Eligible for Contest prizes. Will receive participation prize.

         (3) Display Only: A Set Built or Original Built [see (1) and (2) definitions above] Creation which is offered only for display, not competition. Not eligible for Contest prizes. Will receive participation prize.

C. CONTESTANT:  A participant in the contest who brings his/her Original Built [see (2) definition above] Creation to the site of the contest and pays the entry donation. Eligible for Contest prizes. Will receive participation prize. [Remember: Display Only and Set Built creators are NOT Contestants and are not eligible for Contest prizes. Will receive participation prize. ]

D. CONTESTANT AREA:  Only Contestants and contest staff are allowed behind the tables; general public is excluded. Family members/helpers can only enter the Contestant Area during setup to bring in the Creation(s). Exceptions made for extenuating circumstances. This important rule avoids congestion and enhances security. Contestant Area will have only one entry and one exit.

Eligibilities

A. ELIGIBLE BRICK STYLES: Creations entered into the contest may be of LEGO® brand bricks or similar modular building toys such as Technic® Beams, Mindstorm®, Duplo®, Megablocks®, or Tyco® bricks. THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ELIGIBLE: Knex®, Erector® Sets, Transformers®, or variants thereof. If in doubt, ASK Administrator beforehand.

B. SIZE: There is no size limit as long as your Creation is sized within reason ("reasonable person" standard applies).  If you expect your creation will be more than 16 inches by 16 inches, please let the contest officials know so that they can make sure to reserve enough space for your creation.

Judges and Judging

Judging Criteria

o Creativity

o Originality

o Aesthetic Design

o Cuteness (for lower levels)

o Engineering/Difficulty (for higher levels)

o Innovation of Parts Integration

o Humor

DECISIONS OF JUDGES & ILLEGAL ENTRY POLICY: All decisions of the judges are final. If a Creation is later found to be Set Built after judging is finished, there may be no recourse, but any award level will go to the next-runner-up, and IF the prize can be recovered, it will go to the new winner, but prize recovery cannot be guaranteed, and there are no duplicate prizes. All reasonable efforts to discover Set Built Creations will be made prior to final judging. Any sets which, in the judges' sole discretion, were entered intentionally attempting to cheat so as to qualify as Original Built but are found to be Set Built may, at the lead judge’s sole discretion, be changed to the Display Only category with no refund of entry fee nor any award of Contest prize or participation prize. Cheat entries may also be ejected altogether from the gathering, at the lead judge's sole discretion.

HELPFUL DIALOG/DEMONSTRATIONS DURING JUDGING:  A judge may ask a Contestant to describe their Creation or even demonstrate features of it as part of the judging process. It is advised and encouraged, but not necessary, to be nearby your Creation if you want to discuss your Creation with a judge. If a judge asks for demonstrations or descriptions, a Contestant may then handle their Creation to show the judge. Judges are instructed not to touch Creations and will not know about moving parts unless they are demonstrated.

Setup

Creations will be placed on tables in the Boone Mall. The tables will be set up around the Contestant Area with the general public able to walk around the outside of the chain of tables. The Creations will be placed on the side of the table toward the Contestant Area. An information sheet will be placed on the public side between the Creation and the edge of the table. The information sheet will contain the name of the Creation, the builder and the category it is entered into. This will also provide an 11-inch buffer between the public and the Creations. If someone has a creation larger than 2 feet square, it is advised that they REGISTER EARLY (prior to the day of the contest) to make sure that the proper amount of space can be reserved for their Creation.

Assembly, Modification, Repair During Contest

Contestants are not allowed to make modifications to a Creation once it has been placed on a table. Contestants will have ample time to assemble parts of their Creations, but they are not allowed to ‘build’ once they are placed. If a Creation needs it, repairs can be made at any time with the permission of contest officials.

Security, Accidents, Theft, and Similar Considerations

No one in attendance at, or in the vicinity of, the Contest, nor any Contestant, Contestant parent, guardian, family member, friend nor any attendee, participant, or non-participant, may hold the Boone Mall, or any Administrator, Sponsor, Volunteer, Company manufacturer or informal helper of the Contest responsible or liable for ANY event occurring during, or within 4 hours before or after this event, including theft, injury, accident or loss of ANY kind.  Every effort that would be reasonably expected of volunteers putting on a non-profit contest will be made to prevent theft, and ALL of the individuals described in the first sentence of this paragraph (up to the word "Administrator") will be responsible for preventing theft. Theft or attempted theft will meet with a zero-tolerance policy. Mall security and local police will be called in on any dispute, theft or theft attempt. The public will be cautioned not to touch any of the Creations. Likewise, Contestants will not be allowed to touch any Creation or any item whatsoever that is not their own. For security, we repeat that Contestants must stay out of the Contestant Area unless they need to repair their own Creation. Anyone observed touching a Creation or another person's property will be watched and warned and will be subject to this paragraph's remedies not excluding any other remedy determined during the Contest by the Contest Administrator. THIS REMEDY INCLUDES BEING EJECTED FROM THE CONTEST WITH NO REFUND OR PRIZE OF ANY KIND. We want this to be fun, happy, and SAFE for each of you!

MOST OF ALL, HAVE FUN, AND HAPPY BUILDING!
